Leuning did not send the cartoon. Someone copied it from a webiste and sent it.
On the news today:
Cartoonist Michael Leunig says one of his drawings has been fraudulently submitted in his name to an Iranian newspaper seeking entries on the theme of the Holocaust.
Leunig, who works for The Age in Melbourne, has demanded that the cartoon and words written under his name be removed from an Iranian web site.
Reports earlier said Leunig had submitted a cartoon to Iran's biggest selling newspaper, Hamshahri, which had organised the competition in response to the publication in Western newspapers of controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
But speaking to ABC radio, Leunig denied he had made the entry.
"This is a fraud and a hoax emanating we believe from Australia," Leunig said.
Leunig contacted the newspaper's website last night and requested the cartoon be removed.
"As a matter of extreme urgency I ask you to immediately remove the Leunig cartoon ... from your website," he said.
"I also ask you to remove the accompanying message which claims to be from me.
"I did not submit the cartoon to you and those words are not mine.
"Somebody is acting fraudulently to discredit me and your website and I ask you not to assist them in this misleading and criminal activity ... This (is a) very serious hoax."
An editor of the Iranian site said late last night that the cartoon had been removed.
