No more puffs with your pint in England

British lawmakers voted by a huge margin on Tuesday to ban smoking in every pub, club and indoor public space in England, adding it to the growing list of countries taking a tough stand against smoking. Read the rest here here

I agree with your viewpoint. The British made a wise move banning smoking. I wonder when the Americans will follow their example universally rather than just in certain states and cities.

It is better that it's done state by state. That's the way our Constitution works.

However, if you click on the link Smoking bans spread - golomb effect you can read my post on your very question.

Actually, that's exactly what I'd say. Don't like people smoking in a pub? Go to one without smoking, or start a pub without smoking, as there's obviously so much demand for it.

As it happens, Ireland have done this, and trade is down, by something like 20% in rural areas. This means that pubs will close.

The market leads the way. In the UK, lots of pubs have a dining area that is already non-smoking. They're meeting the demand of their customers. But, plenty of people want to smoke in the bar/lounge and are tolerant of others.

It's probably more likely that parents will now smoke more at home, and affect their parents health. If a couple smoke, this is a big disincentive for them to go out for a pint now.

You are mistaken. Boston, NY and other cities dropped business only in the first few months. Then people went back to their old habits of drinking and socializing in bars without the stink. I m preparing a post with sources from state tax revenues to show that business always goes up even more than pre-ban sales once people get over their initial funk.

Don't tell me all the smokers quit drinking instead of quitting smoking?
